   宅地開発で自然がどんどん失われていく東京の多摩丘陵を舞台に、そこに棲むタヌキたちが人間に反旗をひるがえすべく、人間に化けたりする訓練を始めていく。人間がいないところでは彼らは2本足で歩けば言葉もしゃべる。やがては、他所からも助っ人タヌキが現れて妖怪に化けるなど、設定がとにかくユニーク。日本古来の民族伝承なども巧みに取り入れており、おもしろさの中に文化人類学的興味も見出せよう。

   ただし、社会派・高畑勲監督らしく、演出の視点はどこかシニカルで、かつての学生運動などを彷彿させるおもむきもある。意外にも、タヌキが人間に殺される箇所など、結構残酷な描写もあり。声の出演は古今亭志ん朝や柳家小さん、石田ゆり子、泉谷しげるなど実に多彩。（的田也寸志）

高畑監督のとなりの山田くんやらホタルの墓は正直良さがまったくわからんが、この作品だけはとにかく凄い。人の目から見た野生の獣の姿なんてこんなモノかと思い知らされ、納得させられた。生きて動いている時はとてもリアルに見え、人はそれを可愛いやらなんやら…、死ねば動かないイラスト的な軽いモノに見えてしまう。アニメというジャンルを完璧に生かしています。あと、たぬきの婆さんが歌う唄もとても良いです、「赤勝て、白勝て、どっちも負けろ、負けたたぬきはぶっ殺せ」映画パールハーバーを作ったアホな奴に聞かせてやりたいわ。ラストはホント悲しくなりますね。人に場所や何やら奪われると解ってはいるがたぬき達は無駄なあがきをしたり、結局場所が無くなり人の社会に溶け込む奴らもいて…。そんで、たまに限られた場所に皆で集まり祭りをする。物語が始まった時からどう考えてもこのラストしか考えられないんだが、いざアニメの映像を見ると物凄い感情になる。救いがないようにも見えるが、あるようにも見える。こういうのを撮らなきゃ駄目でしょ?アホみたいに偏った正義並べた映画やら漫画やら小説やらは本当に見習って欲しいものです。

ジブリ的な壮大さとかはないけれど、笑いあり涙ありで子どもから大人までしみじみと楽しめる作品であると思います。
この作品を見て改めて思ったことは、人と自然との共生は難しいということです。もちろん努力すれば少しは改善できるかもしれませんが、それは人間にとって満足できる程度、自然界にとっては微々たるものでしかないのかもしれません。私たち人間の生活の裏には様々な犠牲があって、それはわかっていても「人間様」はやめられないのです。そんなもどかしさを感じました。

開発されていく多摩丘陵で、人間に追われていくタヌキたちが、ばけ学を駆使して、人間達に対抗していく話。タヌキに置き換わっているが、当然、高度成長社会に対する警鐘になっている話と考える。社会的な意味はさておき、純和風で、当時の雰囲気が良く出ていて、何となく懐かしい感じがします。また、タヌキが化けるという土着的な感じもいいです。タヌキのばけっぷりは、制作者の創造力のたまもので、美的に素晴らしかったと思います。
